McChrystal out; Petraeus picked for Afghanistan

Pasadena Star News | 06-23-2010

President Barack Obama sacked his loose-lipped Afghanistan commander Wednesday, a seismic shift for the military order in wartime, and chose the familiar, admired – and tightly disciplined – Gen. David Petraeus to replace him.

Lawmakers from both parties praised the choice of Petraeus, giving the White House confidence he will be confirmed before Congress adjourns at the end of next week.

“General Petraeus is uniquely well-suited to taking over the execution of our Afghanistan strategy on the eve of the Kandahar offensive,” said Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Pasadena.

Rep. Schiff submits more Armenian Genocide Survival Stories into Congressional Record

PanArmenian Network| 06-11-2010

U.S. Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) submitted additional stories from survivors of the Armenian Genocide to be included in the Congressional Record – the second set of many submissions into the national record as part of the new Armenian Genocide Congressional Record Project.

“I submitted three more survivors’ stories of the Armenian Genocide as part of a greater effort to make their experiences part of the national record,” Rep. Schiff said. “This is another in a series of submissions to help document the harrowing stories of the survivors, preserve their accounts, and to help educate the Members of Congress now and in the future on the necessity of recognizing the Armenian Genocide.”

U.S., China relations improving: U.S. Congressman

CRI Hourly News | 06-05-2010

A US congressman says U.S.-China relations are improving on the back of their need for mutual support after undergoing a rocky period earlier this year.

Democratic congressman from California Adam Schiff told a Chinese press club luncheon in LOS ANGELES that the bilateral relationship came under pressure due to U.S. arms sales to Taiwan, the Dalai Lama’s U.S. visit and tensions in the Korean Peninsula, but the overall situation was good and the bilateral cooperation was at a very high level.

Schiff said he didn’t think the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula would have a serious impact on U.S. relations with China.

He said both countries needed each other’s support in forums such as the six-party talks to resolve the issue of nuclear proliferation on the peninsular.

Lawmakers press for hearing on Holocaust insurance

JTA – Jewish and Israel News | 06-02-2010

A bipartisan slate of 12 congressmen, including nine Jewish members, called for a hearing that would allow litigants to make Holocaust-era insurance claims in U.S. courts.

“This bill would help Holocaust survivors and heirs recover on policies sold by insurance companies to their families before World War II, but where benefits have never been paid,” says letter calling for a hearing, initiated by Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Elton Gallegly (R-Calif.) to Rep. John Conyers (D-Mich.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.

Reps. McCollum, Pallone, Schiff, and Walz urge Secretary Clinton to assist Iraqi Armenian Christian refugees

Public Radio of Armenia | 05-21-2010

Representatives Betty McCollum (MN-04), Frank Pallone (NJ-06), Adam Schiff (CA-29), and Tim Walz (MN-01) spearheaded a letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, urging action to ensure the well-being of Iraqi Armenian Christian refugees in Jordan and Syria.

“Conditions for Iraqi Armenian Christian refugees are becoming increasingly desperate at the same time that international support for the vulnerable population is dwindling,” said Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA). “We urge the Obama Administration to commit additional funds to UNHCR to sustain the momentum we have built to help these refugees resettle and rebuild their lives in Armenia, providing a cost-effective and regional solution for families who might otherwise seek resettlement within our borders.”

Political Landscape: Obama signs Schiff’s press bill

Glendale News Press | 05-21-2010

President Obama on Monday signed a bill sponsored by Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) that directs federal officials to examine how other countries treat journalists.

The Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act, named in honor of a Wall Street Journal reporter who was kidnapped and killed by terrorists in Pakistan, will require the U.S. State Department to research and identify countries where there were violations of press freedoms, according to the legislation.

“A free press is a central pillar of the rule of law of the function of the economy and so many other freedoms and liberties,” Schiff said. “Without it so much else suffers. So we hope that countries will be aware that their treatment of their press will be closely watched and it will have an effect on our relationships with them.”

Pearls at White House as Obama signs Freedom of the Press Act

Jewish Journal of Greater LA | 05-20-2010

“This is a very significant and emotional event for us,” said Judea Pearl, a UCLA professor emeritus in computer science. “President Obama’s signature assures us that violators of press freedom throughout the world now know that they will be closely watched. That is something our son Danny fought for all his life.”

The trip to the White House had its beginning 14 months ago, when Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Pasadena) phoned to consult with the Pearls on introducing a Freedom of the Press bill in the House of Representatives, honoring their son’s legacy.

The bill passed in the House last October and unanimously in the Senate last month, sponsored by Sen. Chris Dodd (D-Conn.). Both Dodd and Schiff attended the White House ceremony.

Op-Ed by Rep. Adam Schiff: Pakistani Taliban must be dealt with

The Hill | 05-20-2010

By Rep. Adam Schiff

“The attempted attack in New York City’s Times Square on May 1st illuminated a cluster of challenges confronting counterterrorism officials and policymakers. The quick arrest of Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old Pakistani-American, belied the fact that the threat to America has markedly increased as a result of the Pakistani Taliban’s decision to train operatives for attacks in the U.S., the increased sophistication of terrorist recruiting, the global influence of radical clerics who preach jihad online and the especially disquieting signs of attempts to radicalize America’s Muslim community.”

China, Canada among top five on US piracy watch list

AFP | 05-19-2010
WASHINGTON (AFP) – US legislators condemned Canada, China, Mexico, Russia and Spain on Wednesday for failing to crack down on piracy of movies, music, videogames and other copyrighted works.

Representative Adam Schiff, a Democrat from California, said pressure needs to be brought to bear on US banks and credit companies whose services are being used to pay for pirated copies of music, for example, on “rogue websites.”

“We not only have to put pressure on these countries that are tolerating piracy or encouraging piracy but we also have to put some pressure on companies here at home that are helping facilitate piracy,” Schiff said. “We need to dry up that revenue stream as part of the attack on those sites.”
